AFTER a long hiatus of absence from the racks at
the local big box stores, STAR TREK action figures
have again resurfaced as a reboot of Playmates
figures based upon the reimagined universe that is
coming to the big screen in May, 2009. While the names
are familiar, the characters are reborned as raw
recruits just out of Star Fleet Academy coming
into control of the Enterprise.
|
In addition to the 3 different sizes of action
figures, Toys R Us also carries the two playsets
and the Enterprise by Playmates. TRU also stocked
a model set of an Enterprise.

In my initial encounters with images of the
action figures and of the real life characters, I
was somewhat dismayed at what I perceived were toys
strayed far from a realistic portrayal of the
movie's characters. BUT once I was able to see the
action figures for the first time, at WalMart, I was
delighted by what I saw. The Spock was incredible
and is so much like the real (umm) "McCoy"!
I definitely rate these as an excellent presentation
of the movie's characters. Even with the difficulty of taking a photo in a store with the plastic covering the image of a realistic looking Spock still comes through. Check the eyes! |
Unlike Toys R Us, the Santa Maria WalMart gave
the new Star Trek action figures one half of
an island rack. However, Walmart is only
offerring the small figures and the six inch
figures. As their rack advertising indicates,
their prices are "UNBEATABLE!" Yet even at
these prices the figures looked fairly untouched.

April 28, 2009: Had a chance to drop by the local
Target to check out their display of the new
Star Trek action figures. Wow, what a disappointment!
They had only six pegs for the 6" and the 3.75"
figures wedged in between the new Terminator movie
figures and Star Wars figures. On the lower two
shelves they did have the Enterprise and the two
playsets. It was sad as it was here at Target back in the 1990s when my interest was drawn to action figures by their great display of Star Trek figures, among others. At that time the store had 2 long aisles with 4 end caps of different figures. Star Trek probably occupied around 24 pegs. The first action figure I bought elsewhere was a Picard as Locutus figure. Yet the figures at Target did look like that there had been more purchased than I could tell at either Walmart or Toys R Us. Perhaps when the movies nears the stores will make a special display to capitalize on the ramped up interest by movie estatic fans?
